# Why Copying Text from a PDF Fails (and How to Fix It)

You copy a paragraph from a PDF and get broken lines, words glued together, strange symbols or nothing at all. It's not your fault: PDFs store characters at positions on a page, not paragraphs. Here are the common failures, why they happen, and how to fix them.

## Key facts

- A PDF stores positioned glyphs, not sentences; extraction tools must rebuild the reading order.
- No text at all → the PDF is a scan; you need OCR.
- Garbled symbols → the font has no proper character mapping (ToUnicode); OCR is often the only fix.
- Broken lines and hyphens → line breaks are real characters in the layout; cleaning rejoins them.
- Mixed columns → the extractor read across the page; use reading-order extraction.

## How a PDF stores text

A PDF page is a set of drawing instructions: “draw glyph 37 of font F2 at x=72, y=640”. There is no notion of paragraph, column or even word in many files — just glyphs at positions. When you copy text, your viewer guesses how those glyphs form words, lines and paragraphs. Most of the time it guesses well. When it doesn't, you get the problems below.

## Problem 1: No text at all

**Cause:** the page is an image — a scan, a photo or a flattened export. There are no characters to copy.
**Fix:** run OCR. Our [PDF to text](/tools/pdf-to-text) tool detects image-only pages and runs OCR automatically. See [how to summarize a scanned PDF](/guides/how-to-summarize-a-scanned-pdf).

## Problem 2: Garbled characters or symbols

**Cause:** the PDF uses fonts (often subsetted or custom-encoded) without a correct mapping from glyphs to Unicode characters. The viewer knows how to *draw* the text but not what letters it represents.
**Fix:** try another extraction tool first; if every tool returns garbage, treat the PDF as a scan and use OCR, which reads the shapes instead of the font data.

## Problem 3: Broken lines and hyphenated words

**Cause:** in the PDF, each line is a separate run of text. Copying keeps the line breaks — and the hyphens at the end of lines.
**Fix:** a cleaning step that rejoins lines within a paragraph and removes end-of-line hyphens (our extraction does this).

## Problem 4: Columns mixed together

**Cause:** in multi-column layouts, a naive extractor reads straight across the page, line by line, interleaving the columns.
**Fix:** reading-order extraction, which groups text blocks before reading them. Most modern tools do this; layout-preserving modes do not.

## Problem 5: Missing spaces or extra spaces

**Cause:** some PDFs position each word — or each letter — separately, without real space characters. The extractor has to infer spaces from gaps.
**Fix:** a different extraction engine, or OCR as a last resort.

## Problem 6: Tables come out as a jumble

**Cause:** tables are just text positioned in a grid; there's no table structure in most PDFs.
**Fix:** for data, use a dedicated table-extraction tool; for understanding, ask a question about the table — AI can usually interpret a row-by-row extraction.

## Problem 7: Copying is blocked

**Cause:** the PDF has permission flags that ask viewers to disable copying, or it is password-protected.
**Fix:** if you have the right to use the content, open it with the password and print to a new PDF. Respect the document's licence.

## FAQ

### Why does my copied PDF text have line breaks everywhere?

Because each line is stored separately in the PDF. Paste into a tool that rejoins paragraphs, or use an extractor that cleans line breaks.

### Why do I get strange symbols when copying from a PDF?

The font lacks a proper character mapping. OCR is usually the most reliable workaround.

### How do I extract text from a scanned PDF?

Use OCR. The PDF to text tool on this site runs it automatically when a page has no text layer.

### Can I keep the formatting?

Plain-text extraction drops fonts and layout. To edit with formatting, convert with a PDF-to-Word tool and expect some cleanup.
